At IQST, we advance the under­stand­ing of nature and develop innov­at­ive techno­lo­gies from funda­mental quantum physics. We do this by stimu­lat­ing, expand­ing and support­ing syner­gies between physi­cists, chemists, engin­eers, and life scient­ists. The network includes the core insti­tu­tions — Univer­sity of Stutt­gart, Ulm Univer­sity, Karls­ruhe Insti­tute of Techno­logy, and the Max Planck Insti­tute for Solid State Research in Stutt­gart — and expands to other insti­tu­tions in Baden-Württemberg.

At IQST, an award-winning team of scient­ists pursues inter­dis­cip­lin­ary cutting-edge research, from funda­mental principles to techno­lo­gical applic­a­tions. Explore our research:

Physical sciences

Start­ing from the funda­mental quantum-mechanical proper­ties of particles such as atoms, photons and electrons, we develop novel methods and mater­i­als that serve as the concep­tual basis of future quantum technologies.

Engin­eer­ing & computer science

We collab­or­ate across discip­lines to create novel mater­i­als, robust hardware and software archi­tec­tures, and new integ­ra­tion techno­lo­gies that make it possible to employ quantum devices in ‘real-world’ environments.

Life sciences & medicine

Our vision is to estab­lish, based on advances in funda­mental quantum science and engin­eer­ing, ‘quantum biosciences’ as a new area of research and applic­a­tions — from biochem­istry and biophys­ics to molecu­lar medicine.

MSc courses

Are you inter­ested in diving into the captiv­at­ing field of quantum science or working in a quantum-science field? IQST offers an array of Bachelor’s- and Master’s-degree courses at the Univer­sit­ies of Stutt­gart and Ulm.

School projects

IQST supports and actively devel­ops the dedic­ated teaching–learning lab with hands-on exper­i­ments in physics and quantum science, the so-called the Pupil’s Lab “Spiel der Kräfte” at the 5th Insti­tute of Physics of the Univer­sity of Stutt­gart. The lab regularly hosts pupils of various age groups to intro­duce the fascin­at­ing world of quantum physics on the basis of inter­act­ive and innov­at­ive experiments.

Early Career Network

We promote the scientific independ­ence of postdoc­toral research­ers, group leaders and early career profess­ors working with IQST fellows by support­ing them in apply­ing for research projects and in leader­ship activities.

We provide expert advice to stake­hold­ers in academia, polit­ics and educa­tion, and reach out directly to the wider public. Dive with us into the quantum world. 

Policy making

In IQST, we provide expert advice to policy­makers on quantum science and techno­logy, coordin­ate academic initi­at­ives through­out Baden-Württemberg, and engage in public outreach efforts to connect with stake­hold­ers and society.

Public outreach

IQST offers continu­ing educa­tion workshops and train­ing lectures for high school teach­ers and didactics univer­sity students special­iz­ing in modern physics and quantum science. The IQST Quantum-Science Slam stands as Germany’s sole science slam dedic­ated to quantum science, aiming to trans­fer concepts of quantum science to the general public of all ages and educa­tional backgrounds.

Industry

In IQST, we drive innov­a­tion and techno­logy trans­fer, uncov­er­ing the poten­tial of quantum techno­lo­gies in new fields of indus­trial research, estab­lish­ing partner­ships and networks spanning academia, research insti­tu­tions, and industry, and facil­it­at­ing start-ups while promot­ing entre­pren­eur­ship and provid­ing coordin­a­tion in Baden-Württemberg.
