Second-order correlation function for LED light

Project Description

Possible design for a quantum random number generator (QRNG): 

  • LED producing very weak light pulse
  • Possible use of an absorptive filter
  • Two single photon detectors at positions r1 and r2, and times t1 and t2

Parameters of the experiment are chosen such that: 

  • Only one of the detectors detects a photon
  • Detection probability for each of the detectors is ~50% → Random bit is assigned by which detector clicks
  • Probability that both detectors click at times and is related to second-order correlation function.

Project tasks: 

  • Develop model for light generation in LED
  • Evaluate the full second-order correlation function for LED light
  • Determine influence of absorptive filter
  • Use results to design a QRNG
